Students earn top marks in 'My American Hero' essay and coloring contest

This year, the Auxiliary received 836 coloring sheets from students in kindergarten through third grade and 86 essays from students in fourth and fifth grade, from Hills-Beaver Creek, Fulda, Worthington Christian, St. Mary's School, the Intermediate School and Prairie Elementary.

Two Intermediate School students placed in the essay contest, writing about “My American Hero.” Branyer Santizo Perez, who received second place, and Daniel Garcia, who earned third place, read their essays to their classmates and their teachers, Melanie Kuhl and Laurie Dahlquist. Daniel was also named district winner and will move on to the state level competition. The students and their teachers are joined in the group photo by Dr. Katie Clarke, principal of the Intermediate School, and Cory VanBriesen, assistant principal.

WORTHINGTON — Representatives from the Wilmont VFW Auxiliary visited Prairie Elementary and the Intermediate School last week to honor students who won its “My American Hero” essay and coloring contest.

This year, the Auxiliary received 836 coloring sheets from students in kindergarten through third grade and 86 essays from students in fourth and fifth grade, from Hills-Beaver Creek, Fulda, Worthington Christian, St. Mary's School, the Intermediate School and Prairie Elementary.

The local winners will compete at the district level, and if they earn top marks at the district level, compete at the state level.

Essay contest winners were, with first place, Holly Lunt, Adrian Elementary; second place, Branyer Santizo Perez, Intermediate School in Worthington; and third place, Daniel Garcia, Intermediate School in Worthington.

Jenson will be invited to a recognition banquet in March and League officials will announce the four statewide Triple A Award winners at that time.
