LUVERNE -- The Luverne schools went on partial lockdown Wednesday afternoon after being notified of an alleged bank robbery in downtown Luverne, but students were released on time, according to Superintendent Gary Fisher.

The robbery reportedly occurred at Minnwest Bank on East Main Street.

The elementary school locked down at 12:30 p.m., with the high school following at 1 p.m. Teachers continued with class instruction, although physical education classes were kept indoors. Seniors normally allowed to leave campus for school reasons were kept on the premises.

Teachers walked students to buses during dismissal, and those students who walk to and from school were told to go straight home. Some middle school extra-curricular activates were cancelled.

During the afternoon, only a few outside doors remained unlocked. If the school had gone on full lockdown, all the doors would have been locked.

Fisher did not believe the students were in danger, but opted to go into partial lockdown to be safe. Parents were notified by e-mail about the situation.
