WORTHINGTON - Charges were filed this week against a 30-year-old Worthington man accused of beating his daughter with a belt and threatening to publicly humiliate her after discovering she’d been sexually assaulted by another man.

Due to the nature and sensitivity of the accusations, The Globe decided to withhold the name of the defendant in an effort to protect the victim’s identity.

According to court documents, an investigation was initiated in May after a female child of an undisclosed age reported that her father “pushed her, kicked her leg and spanked her back and leg more than one time with a belt” after discovering she had been sexually abused by another man, the criminal complaint filed Monday in Nobles County District Court alleges.

A physical exam at Child’s Voice in Sioux Falls, S.D. allegedly revealed a welt with bruising on her back. The alleged victim identified tenderness when the injury was touched during the exam. Her father had previously used his belt on her before, she claimed.

During the same exam, the victim also alleged that her dad threatened to strip her of her clothing, take photographs of her nude and make her stand outside naked so people could see her. She reported that she was in her bra and underwear and the defendant was “pulling on her arm trying to drag her outside,” the complaint continues.

According to the complaint, the defendant admitted to hitting the victim with a belt “two times at most.” He also admitted to shoving her but denied spanking her. He claimed the May incident was the first time he used a belt.

The charges filed against the man include felony threats of violence, two similar misdemeanor counts of domestic assault and malicious punishment of a child, a gross misdemeanor. The felony offense is punishable by up to five years imprisonment, a $10,000 fine or both.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the defendant hadn’t been booked into the Nobles County Jail.
