CLOQUET - A man who brought a gun to a drug sting with plans of robbing the dealer pleaded guilty Wednesday in a plea agreement in Carlton County Court.
Davarquez Chavez Wheeler pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated robbery, while a second charge of possession of a firearm by a felon was dropped.
Wheeler, 21, confessed in court to going to the soccer fields near Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Feb. 4 to purchase a large amount of marijuana. He admitted bringing a .45-caliber handgun with him, with the intent of robbing the dealer and not paying for the controlled substance.
The "dealer" was Cloquet police detective Darrin Berg, who arrested Wheeler before he could rob him.
Two days before his arrest in Cloquet, on Feb. 2, Wheeler had been sentenced for third-degree assault in connection with a Sept. 20 incident in Duluth.

The plea agreement included an incarceration cap of 33 months and provisions that Wheeler serve both sentences -- one for the Cloquet robbery and the other for breaking parole on the Duluth conviction -- concurrently. Wheeler will be sentenced June 21 at the Carlton County Courthouse.
