MOORHEAD - A man who was rescued from the Red River after accidentally falling from a train bridge between Moorhead and Fargo last week has died.

Lucas James Littleghost, 29, of West Fargo, died Tuesday evening at Fargo's MeritCare Hospital, according to a death notice received by The Forum.

Littleghost is also known as Lucas Whiteshield.

Moorhead police said Littleghost suffered life-threatening injuries from the accident.

Littleghost's brother, Cheyenne Littleghost, 31, and Ronald Gary Brunette, 38, also were with him at the time of the accident.

The men were walking on the Burlington Northern railroad bridge between downtown Moorhead and Fargo when Littleghost fell from the bridge and dropped 20 feet into the river below.

Littleghost was rescued from the water by Josie Green, an 18-year-old Minnesota State University Moorhead freshman who was jogging along the bike path in Riverfront Park around the same time.

Moorhead Police Lt. Tory Jacobson said Friday that the tragic nature of Littleghost's death does not diminish the actions taken by Green.

"She gave this guy one more chance," Jacobson said.

Jacobson said the investigation into the incident found alcohol played a role.

He said the investigation also found that the railroad had clearly posted no-trespassing signs on the bridge, warning people to stay off.
