March was colder than expected

WORTHINGTON -- The month of March went into the record books as much colder than expected.

The average of the daytime high temperatures was 34.9 degrees, 4.3 degrees colder than the usual 39.2 degrees. The average of the overnight low temperatures was 17.9 degrees, 2.7 degrees colder than the 20.6 degrees that is expected.

There was a single day, March 14, when thermometers hit the 50-degree mark. In addition to that single 50-degree reading, daytime highs in the 40s were logged on 10 days; in the 30s on 13 days; in the 20s on five days; between 10 and 19 degrees on one day; and one day when thermometers hit 8 degrees.

There were two nights when readings dropped to subzero temperatures -- -13 on March 7 and -12 on March 8. Other overnight lows were recorded as follows: between 0 and 9 degrees on seven nights; between 10 and 19 degrees on three nights; between 20 and 29 degrees on 14 nights; and between 30 and 39 degrees on five nights.

The March snowfall total was a generous foot. The month's usual snowfall total is 7.8 inches.

That snowfall arrived as follows: 2.5 inches on March 5; .5 of an inch on March 7; 3.0 inches on Mach 17; .5 of an inch on March 18; 4.0 inches on March 27; .5 of an inch on March 28; and 1 inch on March 31. There were also trace amounts of snow on six other March days.

The precipitation total for the month was 1.07 inches, almost a full inch less than the 1.94 inches that is expected, based on past weather records.
