WORTHINGTON -- Each year community college coaches across the nation are faced with the daunting task of replacing the sophomore talent on their teams.
For Minnesota West head football coach Jeff Linder the task of recruiting players to fill those vacant positions can be a difficult one, but if a recent visit from several quality area athletes is any indication of how well his program will fare this fall, things should be OK.
"We really strive to recruit players from our area," Linder said. "We have a strong relationship with our area coaches, and southwest Minnesota is a hotbed for quality athletes."
During the recent visit, 16 athletes from across the area met with coaches, looked in on classes and viewed the athletic facilities.
Seven Jackson County Central seniors expressed an interest in attending Minnesota West, including the dynamic backfield duo of Caleb Lines and Torey Stewart. A pair of JCC receivers, Ryan Rasche and Jason Cook also took a look, while linemen Jarek Bannister, Kyle Schley and Tom Burmeister paid a visit as well.

The Fulda Raiders had a trio of seniors make the visit. Receiver Tom Kuhl was in Worthington along with linemen Kody Kramer and Tony Clausen.
Jordan Bouw and Justin VanGrootheest, both linemen, were in attendance from Edgerton High School, while Adrian running back/linebacker Glen Kruger and Murray County Central ball carrier Eli Ackerman checked out the program.
Minnesota West also welcomed two Martin County West linemen, guard Ethan Thate and center Tucker Schumann -- giving Linder a bounty of quality athletes to possibly help the Bluejays back to the state tournament this fall.
"These are the strong area athletes we hope to bring here and educate," Linder said. "With the rising cost of education, Minnesota West offers a great alternative to increasingly expensive 4-year programs, ones where these athletes might not get a chance to participate in intercollegiate athletics.
"We like to recruit area athletes whenever possible," Linder added. "With quality instructors and coaches, Minnesota West offers a good balance for student athletes. Players also get the chance to compete right away, and with the campus just a short drive from home, family and friends will still have the opportunity to support their them."
