ST. PAUL - The first fatal motorcycle crash of 2016 claimed the lives of both the driver and passenger.
The crash happened Monday in Fridley, a northern Twin Cities suburb. The motorcycle ran a stoplight and hit a minivan, according to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.
The names of the deceased have yet to be released.
This marks Minnesota’s second earliest motorcycle death, according to the Department of Public Safety. The first death of 2014 was March 11, while the earliest on record was Feb. 23, 2002.
Warmer weather brings motorcycle enthusiasts out on the roads, and conventional motorists need to take extra caution, said Bill Shaffer of the DPS Motorcycle Safety Center.
“Riders haven’t been out on the road for a few months, so it’s a good idea for them to take some time to brush up on their skills,” he said.
