DULUTH - The northern lights were on display in the skies above the Northland early today.
The photo with this story was taken from Normanna Township, north of Duluth, at about 2:30 a.m. The northern lights, or aurora borealis, were visible off-and-on for several hours; eventually more clouds started to move in and disrupt the show.
The display was aided by the fact that the moon set earlier in the evening; when the moon is visible, its light can wash out aurora displays.
Last night was the second consecutive night of moderate aurora activity, according to the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute. The northern lights are forecast to be quiet tonight, though predicted partly to mostly clear skies should allow for good viewing if they do appear.
