GORDON G. MACNAB, 99, of Redmond, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, in Woodinville, Wash.
He was born Feb. 23, 1906, in Rock Rapids, Iowa. He married Mary Louise Thompson in 1940. She died in 2001.
He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1927. He worked as a journalist, having learned the printer's trade at the Lyon County Reporter in Rock Rapids after school and during summers. He worked on newspapers in George and Sibley, Iowa, and owned Iowa's Ashton Leader from 1928 to 1929. He was editor of the Worthington Daily Globe from 1930 to 1935, at a time when the newspaper won editorial awards from the National Editorial Association, the University of Minnesota and the University of Illinois. He joined the (Portland) Oregon Journal in 1937 before joining the Associated Press in 1941, from which he retired in 1971 as Oregon News Editor. He served in the Aleutian Islands during World War II with the 404th Bombardment Squadron, 11th Air Force. Later in the war, he was assigned to the Pentagon, Intelligence Publications. He was awarded the Legion of Merit before his discharge as a captain. He wrote "A Century of News and People in the East Oregonian," a book for the 1975 Centennial of the East Oregonian in Pendleton, Ore. In 1997, he moved with his wife to Redmond.
Surviving are one son, Alexander (Sandy) Macnab, Evanston, Ill.; two daughters, Laura LeVan, Concord, Mass., and Jean Hanson, Snohomish, Wash.; and two grandchildren.
VERNON ROBERT WIERTZEMA, 83, of Ellsworth, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Born June 1, 1922, on a farm in Midland Township in Lyon County near Rock Rapids, he was the son of Henry and Johanna Aeilts Wiertzema. He married Gertrude DeBerg on Dec. 5, 1946, in Sibley, Iowa. She preceded him in death.
He grew up and attended grade school in Edna and later graduated from Midland Township No. 5. After his education, he began working as a hired man for Casey Egan. Following marriage, they rented a farm near Ellsworth and in 1962 purchased the farm. He lived on the farm until the fall of 1997, when he moved into Ellsworth. He became a resident of Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehab Center on Jan. 18, 2006.
Surviving are one son, Verlyn Wiertzema, Trent, S.D.; one daughter, Virginia (Conley) Coy, Freemont, Neb.; two brothers, Verdell (Glenda) Wiertzema, Worthington, and Verdean (Joan) Wiertzema, Boyden, Iowa; one sister, Vera DeBeer, Rock Rapids; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Roste Funeral Home, Rock Rapids.
The service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Reformed Church, rural Ellsworth, with the Rev. Gary Hanson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
KIRK ROBINSON, 54, of Colorado Springs, formerly of Windom, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at his home.
The service will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Colorado Springs.
LaCanne Family Funeral Service, Windom, is in charge of arrangements.
