Alice Theodora Held, 93, was born in Montevideo, Minnesota, on September 7, 1917 to Thor and Alice Graves.
She graduated from Montevideo High School in 1935 and
then completed her education at Moorhead State Teacher's College. She taught second grade in Lake City and Plainview. Alice married Shirley LeRoy Held on December 27, 1942. Shirl served in the Army Air Force in England and they moved to Wadena upon his return. Alice and Shirl lived in Mora, Grove City, Winthrop and Benson
before settling in Worthington, where she supported Shirl in his role as Superintendent of Worthington Public Schools for 20 years.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and godmother. Alice and Shirl shared many travels, Bridge Clubs and rounds of golf. Alice spent countless hours teaching her son how to read and helped him become as independent as possible. She hosted elaborate family gatherings and was well known for her hospitality.

The community was very important to Alice. She actively supported local sports and was inducted into the Worthington Senior High Athletic Hall of Fame. She was an arts enthusiast and served for many years on the board of the Worthington Concert Association. Alice was also a member of PEO Chapter BT.
In addition, Alice was a long-time member of American Lutheran Church. Alice loved music and sang in the church choir for 35 years, spending much of that time as music librarian. Alice died on Monday, November 1, 2010 at South Shore Care Center.
She is survived by her son,Stephen Held, of Worthington; daughter, Pamela (Paul) Mork, of Pinewood; and grandchildren Erika and Karl. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three siblings: Vernon Graves, Mildred Shoultz and Evelyn Shoultz.
Funeral services will be on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the American Lutheran Churchin Worthington, Minnesota, with the Rev. Ryan Radtke officiating. Burial will be at the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington and also from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 5, 2010 at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington. Benson Funeral Home is coordinating the arrangements.
