Douglas "Squeak" Dean Prahm was born on January 2, 1928 in Lake Wilson, Minnesota to Walter and Roberta Hein Prahm. As a young boy, Squeak moved with his family to Slayton and attended Slayton High School. On April 3, 1946 Squeak enlisted in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge on October 3, 1947 he returned to Slayton and worked with his father. On December 17, 1950 he and Maxine Meyer were married in Luverne, MN. Following their marriage the made their home in Slayton and raised their seven children. Squeak did construction work -- driving truck, ditching, sewer construction and building bridges. In 1985 they moved to Texas for five years. Squeak retired in 1990 and they returned to Murray County and made their home on Edgewater Island until 2001 when they moved to Slayton. On May 2, 2005 Squeak moved to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, MN and passed away there on March 21, 2008 at the age of 80. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Slayton. Squeak was active in the Slayton Chamber of Commerce, Associated General Contractors, and a Charter member of the Southwest Minnesota Contractors Association. Squeak enjoyed his dogs, hunting, fishing, playing cards, and shooting pool. He especially enjoyed visiting with friends and talking construction.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Prahm of Slayton, MN, seven children and their spouses, Patricia and Mike Lowe of Mankato, MN, Larry Prahm of Minneapolis, MN, Roger and Beth Prahm of Slayton, MN, Michael and Rita Prahm of Wichita, KS, Jill and David Kafka of Granite Falls, MN, Susan and Steve Zenk of Slayton, MN, and William and Joan Prahm of Slayton, MN, 20 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, his mother, Roberta Beach of Slayton, MN, two sisters and their spouse, Lila and Ross Stone of Marshfield, WI, and Cindy and Darrell Kleve of Slayton, MN. He is preceded in death by his father, Walter Prahm.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. March 25, 2008, at First Presbyterian Church in Slayton, MN, with Rev. David Poppen officiating. Interment is at Hillside Cemetery in Lake Wilson, MN. Military honors accorded by the Slayton American Legion and Slayton VFW Post.
