Elvira Pauline (Lenz) Schmit, daughter of Louis and Mary (Kemper) Lenz, was born on February 15, 1917 at Lismore, Minnesota. Elvira grew up in Lismore and attended school there. Following her education, she remained at home and helped to raise her siblings. She married Michael Schmit, on June 28, 1938 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Lismore. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in the Wilmont area for several years, until moving to Heron Lake in 1956. Elvira received her Certified Nurses Aid Degree from Jackson Vo-Tech and was employed at the Lakeview Nursing Home and the Heron Lake Hospital.
Michael passed away on April 20, 1980 and Elvira continued to live in her home until October of 2006 when she entered the
Lakeview Nursing Home in Heron Lake. She then moved to the Good Samaritan Community in Windom on May 21, 2007 and had resided there since.
Elvira was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake and belonged to the C.C.W. She enjoyed her family, cooking, gardening and embroidering.
Elvira passed away on Monday morning March 17, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Community in Windom. She was 91 years, 1 month and 2 days old.

Elvira is survived by a daughter Mavis and her husband Gary Lutterman of Gaylord; two sons Virgil and his wife Eileen
Schmit of Dalton and Darvin Schmit of Heron Lake; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; a sister Rita Altman of Lakefield and four brothers Edward Lenz of Lismore,
Floyd Lenz of Lincoln, Nebraska, Fred and his wife Rosella Lenz of Lismore and Earl and his wife Rita Lenz of Lismore.
Elvira was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Dean Schmit, two sisters Eleanor and Nelma and two brothers Art and Harvey.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday March 19, 2008 at 2:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. Fr. Andrew Olsem was the Celebrant.
Burial was in the St. Kilian Cemetery in St. Kilian, Minnesota.
