Obituary: Helen Pohlman

Helen Marie Sievert Pohlman, daughter of Henry and Anna (Baumgard) Sievert, was born on January 11, 1924 in West Heron Lake Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. She was baptized on February 3, 1924 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Okabena. Helen attended and graduated from Okabena High School in 1943. She married Norman Pohlman on September 5, 1943 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Okabena. The couple settled into their first home on the Pohlman farm in Heron Lake Township. Helen worked at Worthmore Ice Cream Parlor in Worthington while Norman was in the service. Helen and Norman resided on farms in Lakefield and Sioux Valley before moving to the family farm in Sioux Valley in December of 1962, where they lived and raised their six children. The couple retired and moved to Loon Lake by Jackson in 1989.

Helen was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux Valley where she was a Sunday School Teacher and held numerous offices in the LWML-Ladies Aid. She particularly enjoyed using her talents quilting for projects within the church and community. Within the community she was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary, serving in many offices including President and was the Poppy Queen. She enjoyed visiting Colonial Manor and playing Bingo with the residents. Other activities included PTA, 4-H Leader, Band Parents, Jackson County Extension Group, Nurses' Auxiliary and bowling teams in Lake Park and Lakefield.

Helen's special love and devotion was to her husband and family with special love given to nieces and nephews coming to stay and grow on the farm. Helen and Norman also had a love for helping others and hosting foreign exchange students.

Helen passed away Thursday morning July 17, 2008 at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. She was 84 years old.

Helen is survived by her husband Norman Pohlman of Loon Lake; her six children Douglas (Susan) Pohlman of Sioux Valley, Vicki (Gary) Place of Round Lake, Steven (Marsha) Pohlman of Jackson, Stanley (LeAnn) Pohlman of Sioux Valley, Roger (Shelley) Pohlman of Grand Forks, North Dakota and Dawn (Jeffrey) Luetje of Westside, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three sisters Mable Kolander, Irene Crisman and Rosella Pohlman; brothers-in-law Leo Baumgard, Leo Pohlman and Irvin Ihrke and sisters-in-law Dorothy Ihrke, Janice Doeden and Elaine Pohlman.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her infant daughter Linda Pohlman, brothers Freddy, Johnnie, Raymond and Melvin Sievert, sisters Evelyn Sievert, Ella Baumgard, brothers-in-law LeRoy Pohlman, Rudy Kolander and Vernon Crisman, sisters-in-law Ruby Sievert and Jean Sievert and an infant great grandson Landon Pohlman.

Funeral services will be Monday July 21, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux Valley. Rev. Dean Hanson will officiate. Burial will be in Sioux Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Hansen Funeral Home in Lakefield on Sunday July 20, 2008 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and again at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.
