Phyllis Jean Luing age 70, passed away at her home on Saturday, July 5, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Phyllis was born on October 15, 1937 in Ocheyedan, Iowa the daughter of Kenneth and Mildred Beuthien Meyer of Round Lake, MN. She grew up on the family farm and attended school at the Meyer Country School through sixth grade and then completed her schooling at Sioux Valley. The family farm

was homesteaded by her great grandfather who came from Germany. The

family farm is still farmed today by her brother Kenneth (Sonny) Meyer.

Phyllis met her husband Al, when they were both working at Farmer's Coop Elevator. Phyllis and Al also owned Clary Street Grocery for many years, which they had purchased from Phyllis's uncle Webb Meyer. Phyllis also worked part-time at The Stag for thirteen years and did bookkeeping for a number of other businesses in Worthington. Phyllis's faith in the Lord was very strong and her church community was very important to her. Phyllis and Al were married in Sioux Valley Lutheran Church in 1957. After marriage they attended St. Matthew's Lutheran Church for forty years and have been attending First Lutheran Church for the previous ten years. Phyllis and Al enjoyed the many great friendships from their church communities.

Besides her faith and her family, Phyllis enjoyed spending time with her many friends. She could be found most mornings at Perkins with her fellow "Perkins Pretties", she also enjoyed bridge, card clubs, and her wine and birthday gatherings. She was an active golfer at Worthington Country Club. She also enjoyed traveling with her family and friends.

Phyllis enjoyed volunteering and giving back to the community. She volunteered her time with the Hospital Auxiliary and the Alter Guild at church. Her special interest in the last few years was the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington. She was active in the fundraising and was a previous board member.

Phyllis is survived by her husband Al, of Worthington; four children and twelve grandchildren; son Scott and Lisa Luing of Little Falls, MN and their children Matt, Joe, Joshua, Aaron and Stephen; daughter Brenda and Dave Dvorak of Minnetonka, MN and their children Jenn, Danny and Britney; son Tom Luing of Rosemont, MN and his children Alex and Austin; daughter Debra Knapp of Belle Plaine, MN and her children Taylor and Riley. Phyllis is also survived by her brother Kenneth. She is preceded in death by her parents.Phyllis's memorial service will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, with the Rev. Richard Ricker officiating. Burial will be at the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Matt, Stephen, Jenn, Danny, Alex and Austin.

Visitation will be from 5-8 pm on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
