So Favre, so good

FARGO - After months of waiting and wondering if Brett Favre would become the new Purple People passer, most Vikings fans aren't ready to pass judgment just yet.

FARGO - After months of waiting and wondering if Brett Favre would become the new Purple People passer, most Vikings fans aren't ready to pass judgment just yet.

Minnesota fans had mixed expectations before Favre's preseason debut Friday night and after completing only a four-yard pass in four attempts, the jury was still out.

"That just looks strange," said Jessica Grondahl, watching at the Old Broadway Sport Zone as Favre appeared on one of the bar's many screens.

"It's kind of a tossup, if he's going to perform or if he's going to (stink)," said her husband, Barent Grondahl.

Still he's already invested in Favre, having ordered his own No. 4 jersey.

A few tables away Ian Kramer had very high hopes for the quarterback.

"He might be that extra little bit to take them over the hump to the Super Bowl, to that elite status," Kramer said.

After Favre's two series, Kramer's optimism was a bit tempered.

"It looks like he's been fishing the last couple of months," Kramer said, though he added that it's hard to judge any performance on such limited play.

"This is why I don't like the preseason," Jessica Grondahl summed up.

"It was kind of horse (crap), but it's his first time around. It's OK," said Pat McGeehan at Dempsey's.

Showing his purple pride in a Vikings cap and T-shirt, McGeehan had faith Favre could turn it around.

"He'll be a gunslinger like he always is," McGeehan said. "I'm more than happy we got him. He'll bring us to the promised land."

One person who had already seen enough was Bob Gullingsrud, who was ready to bench Favre, or worse.

When asked what he thought of Favre's debut, Gullingsrud gave the former Green Bay legend a big thumbs down.

"He's old. He's 40. He hasn't won a playoff game in eight years," Gullingsrud said at the Sports Zone. "I don't like him. He's a Packer."
