SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - A 23-year-old Spirit Lake resident died Thursday as a result of being struck by a semi truck.
Casey Spaeth was walking eastbound along Iowa 9 and stepped into the path of a 2007 Kenworth registered to PACCAR Leasing of Bellevue, Wash. and operated by Jason Johnsen, 42, of Sioux Falls, S.D., according to a press release from the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office. The press release added that Johnsen made an evasive action to avoid hitting Spaeth, but was unsuccessful.
Lifesaving measures were administered on scene following the incident, which occurred at approximately 11:18 a.m. Spaeth was pronounced dead at the scene. The Iowa DOT was called, and the highway was detoured for the duration of the on-scene investigation.
Assisting at the scene were the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Spirit Lake Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DNR, Spirit Lake Fire Department and Spirit Lake First Responders.
