WORTHINGTON -- Sanford Regional Hospital Worthington is transitioning its inpatient behavioral health service to Marshall. The transition, to be complete by Wednesday, involves SRHW, Avera Marshall, Avera Psychiatric Services in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Southwestern Mental Health Center.
"While we understand that there will be a sense of loss for some with the closure of the local inpatient unit, there will be new and expanded outpatient behavioral health services available in Worthington soon," said Lynn Olson, SRHW chief executive officer.
Earlier this month, Southwestern Mental Health Center broke ground on its new Unity House on the site of the former Central Elementary School. The new building, to be completed in the fall, will include crisis beds for behavioral health patients who need care without the intensity of an inpatient hospital.
Sanford Health also recently completed negotiations on a contract with Southwestern Mental Health Center to provide 24-hour Adult and Children's Mobile Mental Health Crisis Response Team services for Sanford-affiliated hospitals. Additionally, Avera Marshall Psychiatry Associates will begin providing outpatient psychiatry services twice a month in Worthington on July 14. The Crisis Response Team responds to requests for emergency mental health services from area citizens, businesses, schools, hospitals and law enforcement.
"In the coming weeks, we will be discussing our plans for remodeling the hospital, including the former BHU space," said Olson. "The $2.3 million project will result in a more patient-friendly environment, a more efficient workplace for staff and allow for the expansion of growing services."

The final day for admitting new patients to the Behavioral Health Unit was Wednesday.
