ADRIAN — An Iowa man was held in Nobles County Jail after a Sunday assault left a victim with serious injuries.
Adrian police were dispatched to a residence on Maine Avenue, where a victim had fled the scene of the assault. The victim "had a significant amount of blood on (the) arms, hands and head," according to the criminal complaint. The victim's left eyelid was swollen shut, and there was a large laceration on the face.
The victim reported that they had been verbally arguing with Cornell McBride, 46, of Sibley, Iowa, and McBride allegedly prevented the victim from leaving the house, smashing the victim's phone to stop the victim from calling for help. McBride then reportedly punched the victim in face between five and 10 times with a closed fist, the complaint alleges, and wrapped a towel around the victim's head and pulled so that the victim was unable to breathe.
After interviewing the victim, officers traveled to the residence where McBride was located. When they arrived, they reportedly discovered McBride on the roof of the home with a large knife, demanding that the victim return or he wouldn't come down from the roof. He allegedly admitted that he had hit the victim and knew he would face consequences for it.
Officers were eventually able to get McBride off the roof, after which they arrested him and charged him with two counts of felony domestic assault, third-degree property damage and interfering with a 9-1-1 call. Felony domestic assault carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

While trying to enter the residence, law enforcement discovered that the exterior doors were barricaded, and it was necessary to enter through a broken window. Inside, officers reportedly found bloodstained water in the bathtub and dried blood on a mattress cover.
McBride is in custody with bail set at $50,000 with conditions or $75,000 without conditions.
