Section of Jackson County 17 temporarily closed for bridge repair
WILDER — A section of Jackson County 17 south of Windom will be closed this morning while a bridge is repaired.
The temporary closure is between 910th and 920th streets. It is expected to open again sometime this afternoon. U.S. 71 and Jackson County 39 are detour routes.
According to Jackson County Engineer Tim Stahl, the bridge itself is fine — it’s the abutment that requires attention.
“What happens on these old wooden bridges is that as the water flows through fast it tends to suck material out,” Stahl said, noting that the area has experienced high-water conditions already this year. “Over time, a void can form behind the abutment.”
He said the public works department was aware that a void may occur at that location, and it did over the weekend.
Until a more permanent fix can be made, Stahl expects the section will be marked with a “Bump” or “Reduced Speed” sign after it opens later this afternoon.
