Two men arrested for robbery

WORTHINGTON -- Two men are being held in the Nobles County Jail following an alleged robbery Tuesday afternoon in downtown Worthington. A third suspect is possibly still at large.

WORTHINGTON - Two men are being held in the Nobles County Jail following an alleged robbery Tuesday afternoon in downtown Worthington. A third suspect is possibly still at large. Bobby Martin, 26, of Worthington, and Ojulu Omot, 21, of Rushmore, are each charged with three felony counts relating to robbery, misdemeanor theft and assault charges. They are also each charged with marijuana possession, a petty misdemeanor. According to court documents, at approximately 4:33 p.m. Tuesday Worthington Police officers were informed of a robbery in progress near the Thompson Apartments and El Mexicano No. 3 restaurant. The suspects, described as three African-American men, were seen running near Third Avenue and 11th Street.

One, later identified as Martin, was said to be wearing black pants and a white shirt. Omot was wearing camo pants and a red shirt. When the officer approached the two men, he detected a strong odor of marijuana. Omot admitted to having a bag of marijuana in his pocket that contained several leafy buds. A K-9 unit searched the area, but no additional items were uncovered. A second officer spoke with a witness by phone who said she saw three men running out from either the Thompson Apartments or El Mexicano No. 3 while being chased by a Hispanic man. The Hispanic man claimed the three men had stolen his money. The witness followed Martin and Omot until they were detained by law enforcement. A witness from the restaurant claimed to see the three alleged suspects running from the apartments. He also knew the alleged victim and took officers to the victim’s apartment. When interviewing the alleged victim, officers learned the man was in his home when the three men knocked on his door. He claims he spoke with them outside the apartment door, telling them he didn’t want any trouble and didn’t want to deal with them. The three men then left but returned 30 minutes later. Again, the victim claimed to speak with the trio outside of his apartment. He told the investigating officer he was counting the money in his back pocket while speaking to them and reiterated he didn’t want any trouble. The victim claims as he began to walk away, someone punched him in the back of the head, and when he turned around, the three men were running out of the apartment building and his money was gone. He told officers he had $50 to $60 on him. Martin and Omot were driven by squad car back to the Thompson Apartments, where the victim positively identified both men, and they were arrested. Each man faces nine counts for the alleged incident. The charges of simple robbery and aid and abet simple robbery each carry a penalty of 10 years in prison, a $20,000 fine or both. The additional felony count of attempted simple robbery carries a penalty of not more than half of the maximum imprisonment or fine or both. The theft and aid and abet theft misdemeanors each carry a penalty of 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. The attempted theft misdemeanor carries a penalty of not more than half of the maximum imprisonment or fine or both. The fifth-degree assault and fifth-degree aid and abet assault charges, both misdemeanors, also carry penalties of 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine or both. Finally, the petty misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession is a fine of up to $300.
