FENTON TOWNSHIP, Murray County - A semi tractor-trailer carrying a load of market-ready hogs was involved in a rollover crash Wednesday afternoon on Minnesota 91, near the Murray-Nobles county line.
Jon Patrick Sunderman, 46, of Springfield, was driving a 2004 International semi southbound when he went off the roadway to the right. This caused the trailer to begin tipping and then roll into the ditch, landing on its top. The crash was reported at 1:47 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Sunderman, who was driving for Schieffert Farms of Sleepy Eye, was transported to Sanford Medical Center Luverne with non-life threatening injuries. He was released from the hospital later Wednesday, according to a spokesman for Schieffert Farms.
The Minnesota State Patrol did not have a tally of the hogs in the trailer or how many were killed or injured. Schieffert Farms declined to comment on the numbers, but said the hogs were custom-fed for them.
Assisting at the scene were the Murray County Sheriff’s Office, Edgerton Ambulance, and the Worthington, Lake Wilson, Chandler and Pipestone fire departments. The Worthington and Pipestone fire departments each provided four firefighters to deliver their Livestock Response Trailers to the site. These trailers are equipped with gates and other items necessary to corral livestock.
