Updated: Small tornado hits Pipestone
PIPESTONE — Following Tuesday evening’s small tornado, Pipestone County Emergency Management Director Casey Sievert has been in close contact with representatives from the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, S.D.
From reviewing surveillance footage, Sievert said she learned the tornado was only active from 4:19 to 4:20 p.m. Tuesday.
Residents were not alerted with tornado sirens, she explained, because NWS meteorologists who were monitoring the storm didn’t receive any indication from the radar that a tornado would form.
“It’s never 100% predictable,” Sievert said, “No matter how much technology we have.”
Two of the buildings damaged by the tornado are county-owned, and the other is a residential townhouse. Sievert said that just a couple hours after the storm, the townhouse owners had already brought in a contractor and begun work on the roof.
Damage is still in the process of being assessed, but Sievert said that a deputy from the Pipestone County Sheriff’s Office was able to capture some drone photos of the damage Thursday afternoon.
