WORTHINGTON -- Two girls gape at their reflection in a security mirror, one poised to take a picture. A butterfly flits across a brick wall. Sails and cloth float over a turbulent, sky-blue lake.
These are just a few of the many subjects art students from Worthington High School photographed, painted and sculpted in preparation for the Nobles County Art Center Student Show, due to start next week and end March 26.
"It's really nice to see what students have done," said art teacher Gail Holinka. "Students work hard. This is kind of their big celebration of their creative works."
More than 60 students from ninth grade through 12th grade will show more than 96 pieces in the Art Center in the Nobles County Library this month, including pencil sketches, paintings, prints, digital photography, ceramics, papier-m?ché and mixed media sculptures.
Student artwork displayed is also on sale. Art teacher Tricia Mikle said six or seven pieces sell every year, often for $15 to $50.

One of the features of the show this year will be stained glass. Worthington High School just began offering a stained glass class last year, and since then, teachers Holinka and Mikle have been fine-tuning the process.
Students have created stained glass window hangings, but they've also created stained-glass-decorated mirrors, wooden trays and candle-holders. The process involves carefully planning out the design, and then cutting and grinding glass to the desired shapes before soldering them together.
Computer graphics is another new addition to the art curriculum at WHS. Students create graphics and advertisements for District 518 as well as nonprofit community organizations. The students are currently working on T-shirt designs for the Worthington Windsurfing Regatta and Unvarnished Music Festival.
The gallery opening was originally scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight, but it has been postponed to next week because of inclement weather.
