WHS girls hockey season comes to end

MANKATO -- Despite 62 saves from goalie Taylor Baumhoefner, the Worthington Trojans girls hockey team wrapped up its season with a 7-0 loss to the third-seeded Mankato West Scarlets.

MANKATO -- Despite 62 saves from goalie Taylor Baumhoefner, the Worthington Trojans girls hockey team wrapped up its season with a 7-0 loss to the third-seeded Mankato West Scarlets.

WHS held the Scarlets scoreless for the first nine minutes of the game, until they were bombarded with five goals over the next 3:00 minutes.

"Before and after that three minute stretch in the first period, we played really well," commented WHS coach Tom Ahlberg.

The loss also marked the end of the careers of seniors Megan Rogers, Tonisha Standafer and Marie Pavelko.

"They skated well, and played hard all the way," stated Ahlberg, "They really went out with a bang."

Ahlberg also credited Angela Bui with playing a strong defensive game.

WHS ends the season at 3-19.

New Ulm 11, Luverne 1

NEW ULM -- Korinne O'Connor scored five goals to lead the New Ulm Eagles over the Luverne Cardinals in the opening round of Section 1A.

Heather Kruse scored Luverne's lone goal, while Lis Solma recorded the assist.

The Cardinals only managed to get off eight shots against the Eagles.

Alison Brands charted 40 saves for the Cardinals, who end the season at 4-20.

In the only other playoff game featuring an area team, No. 12 Windom Area fell against No. 5 Faribault, 11-1, in Section 1A.
