Woman dies, man in custody after shooting at American Legion

AURORA -- A woman has died and a man is in custody after a shooting in northeast Minnesota Sunday, the East Range Police Department said in a news release.

Police responded to the American Legion in Aurora just before 9:15 p.m. to find a 49-year-old woman with a gunshot wound. She was taken to Essentia Health-Northern Pines in Aurora, where she died, said the police news release.
A 51-year-old man was taken into custody and remains in St. Louis County Jail in Virginia, where he awaits further court proceedings.
The man and woman knew each other, the police said in a news release, and there are no other suspects being sought at this time.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Gilbert Police Department and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are assisting in the investigation.
An autopsy will be performed by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in Anoka, said the news release.
The East Range Police Department is a cooperative between the cities of Aurora and Hoyt Lakes.
