WORTHINGTON -- With construction of a new building nearing completion, the Worthington Area YMCA kicked off a charter membership drive earlier this week.

Charter membership packages are being sold in advance of the new Y's projected opening this fall. There are several different membership categories available now through Sept. 30.

"The reason we are doing this is to celebrate the existing and all the new members' commitment to the opening of this grand new facility that we have been working on it for so many years," YMCA Executive Director and CEO Andy Johnson said. "Charter members will be able to take advantage of special charter membership rates good only through Sept. 30 and will receive other great benefits as well."

The approximately 46,000 square-foot YMCA facility is located on the site of the campus of Minnesota West Community and Technical College.

"This is the Worthington area's opportunity to get on board," Johnson said. "You may not have had $10,000 or $15,000 to contribute to the facility, but now you can get your family signed up and ready to be there at the opening of the Y this fall."

In addition to receiving charter membership rates only good through Sept. 30, charter members will have exclusive use of the facility the week prior to its grand opening. They also will be acknowledged at the current Y Facility and be recognized by being displayed at the new facility, and will also get a free YMCA charter member T-shirt for all qualified family members.

Johnson said there would be several membership categories, price levels and payment plans.

The Y's fundraising efforts during the last few years have focused on the capital campaign, Johnson said, while charter memberships will focus on facility memberships.

"We still need money for bricks and mortar -- we're not 100 percent done with that -- so we continue our efforts with the fundraising and have also kicked off a Brick Campaign to assist in those efforts.
