SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Three in five South Dakotans have gotten at least an COVID-19 vaccine dose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Tuesday, Oct. 12.
South Dakota, with 60.1% of its total population with at least an initial COVID-19 vaccination shot. Just over half of state residents — 52.3% — are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. In both measures, South Dakota ranks below the national average of 65% and 56%, respectively.
Vaccination progress in the state has been slow, despite a surging number of virus cases and fatalities over the last two months. Over the past month, about 20,000 people have gotten an initial COVID-19 dose and about 23,500 people have gotten fully vaccinated against the virus, according to the CDC.
Vaccinations rates vary widely across the state. Some counties, notably the Native American reservation counties of Oglala Lakota and Dewey, have full vaccination rates between 56-57%. McPherson County, which borders North Dakota, has only 11% of its residents fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to a data tracker from The New York Times.
The South Dakota Department of Health newly reported six South Dakotans had died with COVID-19 on Tuesday, raising the state's death toll to 2,177.
The following are the state Department of Health COVID-19 case rates, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations tracked by the CDC as of Tuesday. All data is the latest available but should be considered preliminary and could be updated at a later date by health officials.
