Spirit Lake man dies in Friday night crash

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — A Spirit Lake man died as a result of motorcycle-vs.-tractor crash Friday night in Dickinson County.

Charles Paine, 56, was westbound on Iowa 9 on a motorcycle. He was traveling behind a tractor towing a large piece of a farm equipment that was operated by Joshua Huff, 32, of Lake Park, Iowa, which was heading west from Vick’s Corner.

Paine attempted to overtake the tractor and collided with the towed equipment as it was turning into a private field entrance. He was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the crash, which took place at approximately 11:16 p.m. Huff was reportedly uninjured.

The Iowa Department of Transportation was contacted, and the highway was detoured for the duration of the on-scene investigation. The collision remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.  The DCSO was assisted by the Spirit Lake Police Department, Lake Park Police Department, Iowa DOT, LRH Ambulance and the Iowa State Patrol.
