Gene Howard Cargin


Gene Howard Cargin, age 83, was born on February 5, 1938, on a farm south of Remsen, IA, the oldest of 14 children born to Howard and Pearl (Hansen) Cargin. He served in the United States Army from 1960 - 1962 stationed at bases in Germany.

On June 18, 1966, Gene was united in marriage to Donna Ver Burg in Marcus, IA. In 1969, they moved to Worthington, MN and Gene started working for Scholtes Auto World as a mechanic until he retired in 2001. After so called “retiring”, he drove bus for Nobles County Heartland Express for ten years – his dream job.

Gene’s life was dedicated to serving others in his occupation and his daily living, making it better for everyone near him. He enjoyed volunteering at his church and at the Manna Food Pantry, dancing, washing his car, traveling, and family time. Gene passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2021, at the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Luverne, MN.

Gene is survived by his wife of 54 years, Donna; daughters, Loma (Dan) Monahan and Rachel (Perry) Haaland; grandsons, Soren and Stian Haaland; siblings, Terry Cargin, Richard Cargin, Connie Shell, Patty (Dale) Lunders, Sherry (Ed) Wagner, Diane (Doug) Driggs, Dennis (Mona) Cargin, James (Debbie) Cargin, Tim (Diane) Cargin, Sally (Scott) Wilkie, Carla (James) Jarratt, and Charles (Linda) Cargin; sister-in-law, Cathryn Cargin, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul; in-laws, Joan, Barbara and Charles Shell, and nephew, Kenneth Cargin.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 24, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at 10:30 a.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN.

Gene’s family would like to thank the Minnesota Veteran’s Home for the excellent care he received over the last year.

Family requests memorials to be directed to the American Lutheran Church in Worthington or Shetek Lutheran Ministries in Slayton, MN.
