Herbert (Herb) Diehl Rockne, age 85, of Worthington, MN, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2021, in the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington. Herb was born on July 31, 1935, to Leon G. and Mabel T. (Diehl) Rockne in Mayville, ND. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Herb graduated from high school in Page, ND, in 1953. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead and Interstate Business College in Fargo and began his life-long career in the banking industry with the First Bank System in 1956.

Herb met Elaine Ankeny in Fargo in August of 1962 and when, on their first date, he took credit for every missed return of the tennis ball playing doubles with friends, she thought he’d ”do” just fine and they were married on August 17, 1963, at the First Lutheran Church in Fargo. Herb firmly believed in showing kindness to everyone, especially those inept at tennis.

After living in several towns in North Dakota, Montana, and in Minneapolis Herb and Elaine moved with their young family to Worthington in 1972 where Herb began working at First National Bank. He became a real estate loan officer at Worthington Federal Savings and Loan in 1978, later working as a consumer loan officer at First State Bank SW in Worthington until he retired in 2000.

Herb was an active member of American Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council and various other committees. He was a member of the Worthington Lions Club for over 40 years, serving as president, on the Board of Directors, and winning annual awards for perfect attendance! Herb was a Worthington Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and a member of SCORE.

From the time he was a young boy Herb loved to fish. For several years, until he was no longer able to attend due to poor health, Herb would make the annual trek with a men’s group to Ear Falls, Ontario, Canada, and fish on Lac Suel for a week. He always caught, and brought home, his limit of fish (2)! Yes, he did catch a trophy fish, had it mounted, and kept it on display on the basement wall. Or, close to the wall. In a box.

Herb will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Elaine; his 3 daughters, Jan (Tony) Stengel, Amy (Trent) Leopold, and Susan (Corey) Noerenberg; his 5 grandchildren, Miranda, Lucas, Brooke, & Kellie Leopold, and Ashley Noerenberg; his brother and sister-in-law, Gary & Roberta Rockne; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joann & Rick Johnson.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Leon & Mabel Rockne, and his infant granddaughter, Anna Marie Noerenberg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent in Herb’s name to American Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be from 9:30-11:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2021, at American Lutheran Church in Worthington. Pastor Anne M. Hokenstad will officiate.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
