Ila Dorothy Murphy

Ila Dorothy (Winter) Murphy passed away on July 5, 2019 at the age of 88 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lakefield, MN. Ila was born on November 26, 1930, in St. Kilian, MN to Peter and Wilhelmina (Gerken) Winter. She was the youngest of eleven children. She moved with her parents to Worthington as a young child. She graduated from Worthington HS in 1948. She owned and operated a small café in Worthington before marrying Robert Murphy and moving to Sioux Valley. They were married for 32 years before his death on September 27, 1987 and were blessed with seven children. Ila was a very hard worker and she instilled this in her children. While raising her family, she devoted an enormous amount of time and effort to the Sioux Valley Log Cabin and became an icon there. In her 33 years, she cleaned & prepped food in the morning, often with Jim and Sara in tow. She waitressed every weekend and multiple events: Mother’s Day, New Year’s Day, Turkey Suppers and feather parties. She finished her time there as “THE Steak for Two” cook. She worked at Hy-Vee in Worthington when she moved back to town in 1989. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren very much, and especially the babies. They became the biggest blessing of her life. She was a faithful member of both St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lakefield. Ila was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 6 brothers, 4 sisters, 2 son-in-laws, a grandson-in-law and her BFF, Vi Bruxvoort. She is survived by her children: Wayne (Kathy) Murphy of Annandale, MN; Margaret (Kevin) Evans of Madrid, IA; Jean (Tom) DeWall of Zimmerman, MN; Barb Bakalyar of Lakefield, MN; Suzanne (Bill) Bohning of North Mankato, MN; Jim (girlfriend, Jenni Kuhl) Murphy of Avoca, MN; Sara (Paul) Smith of Shakopee, MN; 35 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Vivian Winter and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at the Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lakefield with Father Jonathan Fasnacht officiating. Burial will be at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Lakefield, MN. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, on Monday, July 8, 2019 at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, visitation will also be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. A heartfelt thank you to the Colonial Manor staff, and especially, Brittany Cromwell, for their loving care. Eternal rest grant unto her, Oh Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon her.
