Jon Paul Benson

Jon Paul Benson, age 82, was born on January 2, 1938, in Worthington, MN, the son of Harold and Lorna (Rydman) Benson. He graduated from Worthington High School and then the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in Mortuary Science. Jon married Joyce Allar and they had two children, Christopher and Amy. Joyce died in 1988. Jon married Judy Johnson and they continued to live in the historic house that Jon had lived in. Jon was co-owner of Benson Brothers Funeral Home for over forty years, retiring in 2000. Jon was active in CCSI, Turkey Day, Chamber of Commerce, the Dayton House, and several other civic organizations. Jon spent many years in the Minnesota National Guards and served as a Captain. He had several hobbies including performing magic tricks, playing cards, and was an avid Star Wars collector. Jon’s favorite holiday was July 4th, where he had an annual picnic for Worthington politicians, business owners, family, and friends. Jon died on Thursday, July 2, 2020, at the Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, MN.

Jon is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Christopher; brothers, Robert (Jane) and Bill (Nancy); sister, Margaret Benson, and brother-in-law, Merv Nelson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce; daughter, Amy; parents, Harold and Lorna, and sister, Mary Jo Nelson.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2020, at 10:30 a.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Steve Olson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be held in the Worthington Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Nobles County Historical Society and Worthington Cemetery Association.
