A time of gathering for family and friends will be held on Friday, October 4th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the LaCanne Family Funeral Home in Windom.

Leonard “Lenny” Smith passed away on Saturday, September 28th, at the Good Samaritan Society - Sogge Memorial in Windom.

Leonard Keith Smith was born to Merrill and Dora Gentry on May 12, 1947 in Windom, MN. He left Windom permanently when he relocated to his heavenly home on September 28, 2019. The time between those dates was the life he lived.

“Never quit, never give up.” In 1966 Lenny joined the army and served his country overseas. This army mantra influenced his thinking throughout life. In 1972 Lenny married Kathy Ellen Freid. From that marriage came Lenny’s pride and joy… his “homeboy”, Damon.

Lenny worked in several arenas in the auto industry prior to finishing his career as an over the road driver, most recently with Bedford Industries. After finally committing to REALLY retiring in May, his newly discovered health issues circumvented keeping that promise.

Lenny loved his Lord and claimed to have worn out two pairs of shoes running the altar call aisle as a child. In his adult life he often marveled at how God was so faithful in “protecting an old fool like me for over four million miles and 45 Sturgis trips.”

Lenny married the love of his life, Lisa Jean Hoeft on 3/14/06. With that union Lenny not only gained a wife but also a community and friends in Heron Lake, which he thrived on and was grateful for. Together, he and Lisa Jean completed his personal bucket list doing what he enjoyed with people he loved. Special friends over driveway fires, spontaneous “biker” rides, camping, trips to Sturgis, morning coffee over the kitchen table, endless storytelling, and regular phone calls to his “homeboy” who is now living in far away Phoenix.

He will be remembered for his quick wit, storytelling, impish smile, “Lennyisms” and love of life… a life well lived!

Lenny is survived by his “wifesner”, Lisa Jean of Heron Lake; son Damon, Phoenix, AZ; sisters, Darlene St. John, Windom; Sally Pearson, McAllen, TX; Evelyn Leverenz, Malibu, CA; brother, Larry (Ruth), Windom; sister-in-law Bonnie Smith of Burnsville and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leland; sister, Marion (Robert) Lindstrom; infant sister, Myrtle; brothers-in-law, Cedric Pearson and Mel St. John.Condolences can be sent online to
