Lorraine Amelia Schafer


LORRAINE AMELIA SCHAFER, age 99, of Worthington, died Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at the South Shore Care Center in Worthington. She was born on May 15, 1920, on a farm near Iona, MN. Lorraine was the daughter of Peter and Margaret (Hensen) Wagner. She attended rural schools in Murray County and our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic School in Wilmont, MN; and was later employed in Slayton, MN.

Lorraine married Leon Schafer on November 12, 1941, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Slayton, MN. Leon and Lorraine farmed near Currie, MN until Leon entered the US Army in April of 1942. Lorraine stayed on the farm until 1944, when she moved into Slayton. After Leon's discharge from the Army in 1945, the couple farmed in Murray County until 1954, when they moved to a farm in Ewington Township in Jackson County. Lorraine and Leon retired from farming in 1996, and lived on the home farm until 2002 when they moved to Worthington. She resided at the South Shore Care Center, in Worthington up until her death.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, in Worthington, and the Winona Council of Catholic Women. She enjoyed the farm, her family, sports, especially baseball and bowling, music and dancing.

Lorraine is survived by her four children, Bradley (Dianne) Schafer, Burnsville; Nancy Hartman, Burnsville; Daniel (Joan) Schafer, Rosemount; and Michael (Kim) Schafer, Minnetonka; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband, Leon on November 30, 2010; a daughter, Barbara on February 13, 2015; son-in-law, Richard Hartman on October 19, 2016; seven brothers; and two sisters.

The family wishes to express their special thanks to the staff at South Shore Care Center and Compassionate Care Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The American Cancer Society, Autism Speaks and The Alzheimer's Association.

Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 5th, from 5-8 pm at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington; and from 9:30 to 10:15 am Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Tuesday, Aug. 6th, at St. Mary Catholic Church, in Worthington, officiated by Fr. James Callahan and Deacon Vern Behrends. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery.
