Ferdinand “Ferdie” Haberman

Ferdinand “Ferdie” or “F.W.” William Haberman, 92, passed away at his home in Brewster, MN, on February 21, 2023. Ferdie was born on December 27, 1930 in Worthington, MN, to Ferdinand E. and Stella (Silver) Haberman. He attended country school and later graduated from Brewster Public School. On April 26, 1952 Ferdie married the love of his life, Lois Ruder. They celebrated 70 years of marriage and were blessed with seven children. He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Ferdie joined the army during the Korean War and served stateside as a motor pool mechanic. After his service, they moved back to Minnesota where he farmed and raised his family. Ferdie was a hardworking man with many talents. If he needed something done he just did it! Ferdie was honored to be a lifetime member of American Legion Post #464. He served many roles, including Second District Commander. He was recognized for carrying the post colors for 55 consecutive years at the National Convention. He also served on the Brain Science Committee as president for a number of years. Ferdie served on the board for the Worthington Crippled Children’s School Inc for 25 years.

Ferdie and Lois loved to travel, wintering in Texas during retirement. He also enjoyed his hobby of aviation, flying his own plane for 35 years.

Ferdie had an amazing love for his wife and through this showed his whole family the importance of a strong family unit. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He was devoted to his faith, family, and country. He loved sharing stories and playing cards.

Ferdie is survived by his wife, Lois, and his children Tony (Melonie) of Brewster, Mike (Delores) of Brewster, Pat (Doreen) of Brewster, Jackie (Mike) Uphoff of Brainerd, MN, Dan (Jenny) of Broken Arrow, OK, Ann (Russell) Obermoller of Brewster and foreign exchange student Rosa Free from Mexico. He leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Rod (Jeanne) Haberman of Brewster and Pat (Barb) Haberman of Waseca, his brother and sister in-laws, Gene (Bonnie) Ruder of Maple Park, IL, Glee Ruder of Prior Lake, MN, Roseanne Penter of Stanwood, WA, Mary Shannon, Burlington, IA, and Dick (Arlis) Ruder of Delano, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

Ferdie was preceded in death by his daughter, Laurie; infant son; parents, Ferd and Stella; in-laws, Leo and Cleo Ruder; brothers, Jim, Jack, Bob & Bill; sister, Mary; brothers-in-law, Jim, David, and Frank, and sisters-in-law, Carol and Rosemary.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 27, 2023, at 10:30 am, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster, MN, with Father Pratap Reddy Salibindla officiating. Casket bearers were Ferdie’s grandsons, Sam, Ben and Ted Haberman, Zach Haberman, Eric Uphoff, and Nick, Alex and Kurt Obermoller. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Brewster, MN.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington was in charge of arrangements.
