Gunvor “Gunnie” Barstad Mahlberg

Gunvor “Gunnie” Barstad Mahlberg, age 95, was born on March 9, 1926, in Scobey, MT, the daughter of Ingeborg and Mikkel Barstad, recent immigrants from Norway. She graduated from Scobey High School and went on to St. Olaf College School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1947.

Gunnie met and later married Donald Mahlberg on February 17, 1948, and moved to the Mahlberg farm south of Worthington, MN, where they raised their five children.

Over her lifetime, she enjoyed raising her family and tending her flowers. She continued in her nursing career at the Worthington Hospital, Lake Haven Nursing Home and as a nursing instructor for Worthington Community College.

Faith was a central part of her life and she was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN.

Gunnie passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2021, at the Sibley Specialty Care Center in Sibley, IA.

Gunnie is survived by her children, Ingrid (Lee) Helmers of Osakis, MN, Craig (Leslie) Mahlberg of Ham Lake, MN, Rolf (Joan) Mahlberg of Worthington, MN, Wes (Mary) Mahlberg of Buffalo, MN, and Melissa (Rick) Anderson of Anderson Island, WA; twenty two grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren; sisters, Agnes (James) Neilson and Haldis Van Buskirk. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; brothers, John and Gerry, and sisters, Ingaborg and Dottie.

Services will be held at a later date.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
