Walter Carl Ackermann


Walter Carl Ackermann, son of L. Theo and Matilda (Janssen) Ackermann, was born September 29, 1926, in Ewington Township, Minnesota. Walter attended Ewington School through eighth grade and graduated from Okabena Public School in 1944. Walter married Betty Ditch on February 2, 1948, in Brewster, MN. Betty passed away on June 3, 2015, after 67 years of marriage. After marriage, Walter and Betty made their home in rural Lakefield operating a dairy farm until 1982. After retiring from the dairy, Walt and Betty spent many years reupholstering furniture. Walter enjoyed making rock jewelry and belonged to the Fairmont rock club. They enjoyed camping and traveling. Walter and Betty took motorcycle trips to California, Missouri, Canada, Black Hills and the Sturgis rally. They also traveled by train to Arizona, California and Washington and by plane to Mexico. After Betty’s death, Walter moved to Doman Rose Place in Lakefield. In October of 2019, he moved to Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake, MN.

Walter passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2019, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, MN. Walter is survived by son, Jerry (Nancy) Ackermann of Lakefield, MN; granddaughters, Stacy Ackermann of Brewster, MN and Becky Streiff (Steve Roach) of Heron Lake, MN; great grandson, Ryder of Heron Lake, MN; sister-in-law, Arline Ditch of New Hope, MN, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; parents; sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Donald Hanson; brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Beatrice Ackermann; brother-in-law, Robert Ditch; sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Leonard Thurston and Winnifred and Raymond Rademacher.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2019, at 2:00 p.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield, MN, with Rev. Phillip Beukema officiating. Burial will be held in the Lakefield Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
