WORTHINGTON - Effective communication happens when quality opportunities are created to share information with each other. With that statement in mind, the District Communications Committee has created several goals for the 2014-2015 school year.
One of the committee’s goals is to create collaborative partnerships with local businesses and other stakeholders. Another goal of the committee is to develop an approach that utilizes technology as a positive communication tool for promotion and sharing of information. The district has also been active in finding ways to reach out and communicate with the community and recognize local businesses.
This school year, the District Communications Committee continued to recognize local businesses for their ongoing support for District 518 at home sporting events. One such approach is “Business Appreciation Nights,” during which local businesses were recognized during home sporting events. Several local businesses were contacted and asked if they would like to be recognized during a fall or winter sporting event of their choice. These businesses were given free passes for their employees and families to attend the game. The business was recognized several times throughout the game and during intermissions of the event. These nights were a great way for the school district to show their appreciation for the support that is received from local businesses.
The committee has also worked at improving the district’s communication via social media. The district has an official Facebook and Twitter site along with a YouTube channel. With the expansion of social media, this has helped the district communicate with the community about upcoming events, school closings, employment opportunities, and the great work that our students are doing each and every day. The District Communications Committee is looking at expanding in the social media world next year by creating hashtags for people to follow. By creating specific hashtags, it allows people to more easily stay connected with what is happening in the district. The expansion into the social media world has been very positive and allowed people from all over the world to stay connected with District 518.
The District’s Communications Committee has worked hard this year to continue to effectively communicate with students, staff, parents and the community. The committee hopes to continue to recognize local businesses for their support and keep the community up to date with happenings through social media.
