On Monday, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for the new events center and Comfort Suites hotel to be located along U.S. 59 near the city's Bioscience Industrial Park. The following morning, another groundbreaking event -- this for a retention pond -- took place at Minnesota West's Worthington campus, and was made possible, in part, by contributions from the college, City of Worthington, Nobles County and District 518, among others.
Two significant groundbreakings over the course of a few hours is certainly positive news for this city, but there's much more to the overall story than what's taken place this week.
It wasn't long ago, after all, that a groundbreaking took place for the senior center, to be located downtown at the site of the old Worthington Area YMCA. Earlier this spring, there was a groundbreaking for the new Avera Worthington Speciality Clinics facility on Ryan's Road. Last fall, work began on Worthington's fire station project -- an effort celebrated during an open house this past Saturday. Earlier in 2011, major renovations at Memorial Auditorium work were completed to rave reviews.
Clearly, there's plenty of forward thinking going on within the community. We're thankful for these sorts of efforts, which will no doubt promote Worthington's viability and vibrancy in the years to come.
