We all learned the adage about means and ends. We learn something about a person’s character, leadership and ethics when we examine the means they are willing to employ to reach an end.
Consider Sen. Ted Cruz’s use of procedural blocks to prevent the appointment of ambassadors to Sweden and Norway. Despite acknowledging the qualifications of the appointees, Cruz continues to block the appointments because he wants to insult China by naming a street in Washington after a polarizing Chinese dissident. Concerned that this would cripple our relationship with China, members of Congress from both parties refuse to lend support. After all, China is a leading purchaser of American farm commodities. Even the most hardline GOP senator from a grain farm state will not support Cruz in this.
Despite a lack of support from his colleagues, Cruz continues to use procedural technicalities to block the appointments. Norway has been without a U.S. ambassador for 800 days and Sweden for over 400 days. So yes, our Scandinavian allies are being insulted because Ted Cruz is willing to hold their relationship with our nation as hostage in a quixotic quest to offend China.
When someone is willing to embarrass our nation in an attempt to leverage power to win a generally irrelevant point; that person ought not to serve in government. When a person considers an opportunity to taunt more important than international relationships; that person should not serve in government.
And when a person continues a fight past all reason that person should not be given further power to play pointless and destructive political games.
I have been watching the GOP presidential race with increasing amazement. I cannot picture any of the candidates serving as president. Ted Cruz is being suggested as a viable alternative to the current front runner. I beg to differ. Donald Trump is not qualified, but nor is Sen. Cruz. Our nation deserves a better selection of candidates than those currently offered by the GOP.
