By Brian Abrahamson, District 22 Senate Candidate

I am not going to say I'm shocked that we are at this point. We have a situation now that we have a Republican president, and a Republican-led House and Senate. Some might feel vindicated and happy about this. I have lived through a Bush administration, and then the Democrats had to come in and clean up trillions of dollars of deficit the Republican president created … but anyway.

With a Republican House and Senate in charge we will not see any middle class, education or infrastructure issues resolved. We will see a lot of protection for the wealthy few and corporations. We will probably see nothing get done that is any good for Minnesota families. And with a Republican president, we will see much of the same that we saw with the Bush(es) administrations -- a lot of war; lowering taxes and tax credits that will cripple and add debt; and protection of corporations and tax cuts for them that leave the poor middle crumbling in poverty.

But I say that to say this. When I drove my children to school today, I was sad and sickened. I saw a pickup truck with a Confederate flag on one side and a "huuuge" Trump flag on the other, with "Merica" written on the front. I weep for our youth, because at this point they don't care about policies and what they can do to our country, state etc. They don’t care about the environment, the economy, education etc. They were only subjected to the bullying of minorities and those with disabilities. They see that a President Trump administration would be OK with bigotry, hate and xenophobia, and it's not OK. It's not OK to boast about a Confederate flag and what it represents. It's not OK to submit this kind of demagoguery to our children. We should ban this kind of activity now. We should brace ourselves for the anti-bullying procedures that teachers need to apply.

I not only weep for our children; I weep for our community and our district. We are going to be in a sad state. Mark my words. I will be a thorn in the side of our House and Senate over the next few years as I seek to run for Senate in four years.
