I was reading the diabetes prevention article in Monday’s edition and would like to commend these programs for advocating a better lifestyle. The only problem I have is the fact that it was not specified as Type 2 diabetes. It could lead one to believe that a lifestyle change could cure all diabetes.
Type 1 is an autoimmune disorder where the patients own body attacks and kills the pancreas. It has absolutely nothing to do with lifestyle changes. It hurts me that people can look at my underweight son and wonder what he did to cause this (he’s 18).
Anytime someone claims to be able to prevent this awful disease, it should be clarified what specific type it is. People with type 1 often have a difficult time explaining themselves to others. Let’s end the stigma for type 1.
