We just want to say that we are proud of our local bars and restaurants for taking a positive step toward preserving the integrity of the smoke-free law, and we congratulate their efforts to protect health.
We are disappointed that other establishments across the state have been staging so-called "theatrical productions" in bars. The actions of a few are placing the health of employees and patrons at risk and are clear attempts of trying to get around the law.
In a statement issued last week, the Minnesota Department of Health clearly stated that the "theatrical productions" in bars are a violation of the Freedom to Breathe Act, and violators will be and have been fined.
The smoking ban was overwhelmingly supported by Minnesotans and was approved after years of open, public debate. The bottom line is that Minnesotans do not want to go backwards when it comes to protecting public health.
We encourage you to continue to go out and support your local bars and restaurants and enjoy the smoke-free environments with friends and family. We have heard from hundreds of local folks who are enjoying the fresh air and many others who have quit smoking because of the new law. Congratulations Nobles County!
