On Friday Minnesota lost a champion of the people. Senator Gary W. Kubly of Granite Falls passed away after his struggle with ALS.

I was fortunate enough to be able to know Gary Kubly and proud to call him my mentor and friend. Gary was quiet, unassuming, caring, intelligent and compassionate. All throughout his life he was dedicated to serving others. Whether it was as a teacher, a Lutheran pastor or state senator, Gary showed his compassion for others and set a good example for others to follow.

It is sad that there are no more Gary Kublys in politics today. We could really use a guy like him. I was at the State Capitol last May and I had the chance to visit with him, and we discussed life and -- of course -- politics. He said something to me that I think all politicians should hear: "You treat people with respect because you might need them later."

Here's to Sen. Kubly for his dedicated service and compassion for others in life. Rest in peace, my friend.
