As a dues-paying member of UFCW Local 1161, I would like to share a different opinion then that of my union brother in his letter of Aug. 31, “Union Strong? JBS employee thinks not.”
* An hourly wage increase.
* A one-time bonus payment.
* A reduction in prescription drug co-pays.
* Free clinic for primary care.
* An annual company contribution to the employee to help pay the deductible.
Those are just a few of the points that were not mentioned in his letter. But hey - I get it. They don’t fit with his narrative. We can agree to disagree on the merits of the proposal, but I do take exception to his characterization of the members.
The insinuation that “these people” don’t understand or use the benefits is just wrong. “These people” stood out in the cold in front of the plant on a frigid March day to let the company know that they wanted a fair and equitable contract. “These people” soundly rejected the company’s proposal last year and sent a clear message that they would take to the streets until they had a fair contract.
“These people” are the heart and soul of UFCW Local 1161. I am proud to stand with them.
