Letter: Support our future leaders and vote yes

As we are getting to the final day to make our decision to support or not support a referendum for our local schools, here are a couple of thoughts.

If this referendum is defeated, the issues are still there — the overcrowding is still a problem, the student numbers continue to grow, construction costs continue to rise. The issues are not going away.

Some people question the need for more space because when they went to District 518 schools 30 or 40 years ago, the class sizes were much larger. That might be true, but with federal mandates, advanced programming, technology, ESL and special education our needs require much more space.

I was a school board member when we asked for a referendum to build Prairie Elementary. Little did we know we would outgrow it in such a short amount of time. It was the right thing to do then, and now is the right time to vote yes for a new high school.

I hope that you think seriously about the future and support our youth and the community by casting a YES vote on Feb. 13 and, after that, I hope that district residents from both sides of the issue can start the healing process.

Good luck, and thank you for your support of our future leaders.
