Letter: Huss enjoys first month as exchange student
Most of you probably know me because of the article from last week. You were able to learn more about me, my family, my life in Germany and in Worthington.
This letter by me is for you. I want to tell you about all the experiences and memories I already made in my first month here in Worthington.
I arrived on Aug. 9. This was the day when my adventure began. The following week I started playing tennis here, which I’ve never played before, but it’s so much fun and I got to meet a lot of nice people due to tennis. I had my first tennis meets also! Some of them I lost, but so did I win some!
I even traveled to two different states around Minnesota already! We drove to Sioux Falls, which was a really nice trip and I did enjoy this trip so much. We not only visited the waterfalls, but ate in a Mongolian restaurant. It was something new, but this is exactly what I want to do. Experience new things. And food I’ve never eaten before is one of those things (It was so delicious, by the way).
I traveled to Iowa, too, where me and my host family, the Moodys, visited some family members and the highest point in Iowa. This viewpoint was really nice to visit and if you’ve never been there, you should definitely do so!
I did not only travel to the states around Minnesota, I also traveled in Minnesota. One day, we drove to Valleyfair in Shakopee, which was a great day! I loved riding all the different roller coasters, and it was such a lovely day.
I joined the marching band in school, too. With the band, I went to Minneapolis for my first ever parade! The parade was very different than usual but I thought it was such a nice experience because as I just said, I’ve never done something like this before. Everyone was really nice and friendly, and I was able to get to meet some people before school even started.
I did explore Worthington, too, of course. Me and some other friends went on a bike ride where I was able to see all the different things Worthington has to offer. This was good for me because now I’m able to continue my morning runs or bike rides in Worthington. On weekends, I love running around the lake or go on a bike ride when the weather is good and just looking at the lake while running.
I even went to Pioneer Village in Worthington, which I thought was very interesting. It’s nice seeing all the buildings that used to be in Worthington or around and just learning more about Worthington and its history.
On Labor Day weekend before school started again, Grace, my host mom Joy and I made a short road trip to Minneapolis. On our way to the Cities, we stopped at the famous yellow candy store. I was amazed by all the different candy! And I have to confess, I brought a lot of candy because everything looked so delicious, and best of all I wanted to buy the whole candy store. By the time we arrived in Minneapolis, we got ready for the Taylor Swift concert in the U.S. Bank Stadium. Wow! It was an amazing night! Not only the opening singers, Camila Cabello and Charli XCX, did a great show, but of course Taylor Swift, too!
I’ve never been to such a huge concert like this before, and I was so happy and thankful to experience this in my first month here. This concert was definitely one of my highlights so far. We also went to the Mall of America. I was happy about all my new clothes, but I’m pretty sure my wallet wasn’t as happy as me after the shopping trip. But it was definitely worth it so no reason to complain about that, dear wallet.
Well, and then it was time for school to start. I now completed the first week of school here, and I’m really happy to be able to go to school in Worthington. All my teachers are really friendly, and I do like the classes I signed up for so far. I not only took Spanish and U.S. history, but also a gym class and a class called Food and Nutrition. The school routine is really different than back home in Germany, but I’m trying to get used to all of this and I’m pretty sure everything will work out.
I am so thankful to be here and to have this amazing opportunity to spend a whole year here. Thank you to everyone who made my dream come true and such a great experience so far! Hopefully I can go to more soccer and football games next month, and I’m already excited about all the experiences I will make during my second month here in Worthington.
Best wishes, and feel welcome to say hi to me if you see me biking around the lake or every other time.
