"Minnesota on the Map," a traveling exhibit from the Minnesota Historical Society, was introduced with an open house at the Nobles County Historical Society.
The Nobles County commissioners met for an all-day strategic planning session Tuesday, discussing all areas of county government to identify cost savings, collaboration and continued services. One area in which cost savings might be realized, they thought, could be the county's park system; the county owned and maintained seven parks, ranging from four acres to 46 acres.
The Round Lake-Brewster school district faced the prospect of budget cuts, including the possible need to eliminate positions. Proposed changes included a $70,000 reduction at Brewster Elementary and an estimated $130,000 to $150,000 in reductions at Round Lake High School.
A 27-year-old female was in custody after authorities responded to a report of an alleged stabbing incident at 7:18 a.m. in the 300 block of West Oxford Street, according to the Worthington Police Department. A 31-year-old male had apparent stab wounds when police arrived at the scene.

The Worthington High School Trojan speech team placed third in the AA class at the Mankato East Fiesta tournament. Top individual finishers for the Trojans were Branden Roth (first in creative expression), Melissa Clark (first in informative speaking) and Bridget Wass (second in extemporaneous reading).
To stay out of statutory operating debt in the 2007-08 school year, Jackson County Central's school board voted last week to cut $386,000 from the year's personnel budget, $12,000 from the supplies budget and $60,000 from the transportation budget. In just a few years, 25 positions had been cut to keep the district out of debt.
Clifton "Clif" Karhu, 79, of Kyoto, Japan, died this week. Karhu was one of the most successful contemporary artists to work in the Japanese woodblock form. Karhu was a 1946 Worthington High School graduate.
Meadowland Farms Cooperative was hoping to break ground as soon as possible on an addition to the elevator in Avoca. Construction at the new location was expected to cost about $2.5 million.
Joyce Jacobs was the new executive director of the Southwest Minnesota Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The region's sixth grade Math Masters competition was held at Worthington Middle School, with District 518 teachers Rich Besel and Rich Liapis serving as the regional Math Masters coordinators. Worthington students finished well, with Matt Tims, Erin Schutte, Kyle Fleming and Hal Pham earning individual medallions and Worthington Team 2 (Matt Tims, Hal Pham, Keeli Standafer, Vicki Ektnitphong and Tim Roos) capturing top team honors.

Electrical problems appeared to have caused the air dome at MC Fitness and Sportsdome in Worthington to collapse, owner Mark Ossenfort said. The 32,000 square-foot structure deflated between 2 and 9 a.m. Sunday.
The Southern Minnesota Habitat for Humanity chapter announced that the Luverne family of Shari Kracht would be the beneficiaries of its first building project, with a new house slated for 204 SW Park St., Luverne.
Faith Christian High School in Bigelow announced it would close at the end of the 2001-02 school year due to declining enrollment.

Basketball player Lynn Kruse of Pipestone High School was named the Daily Globe's Athlete of the Week.
The second annual Worthington Wild Turkey Basketball Shootout hosted 54 teams from southwest Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota.
Mary Matuska and her brother, Joe Matuska, ran the State Theatre in Jackson. The Matuskas' involvement with theaters started in 1918 when their parents, Frank and Mary, bought the Scenic Theatre.
Glen Gust, manager of Glen's Food Center, Luverne, had collected about 25,000 signatures on a petition urging Gov. Rudy Perpich to push for legislation that would reduce workers' compensation premiums.

Two stores were planning to open in the new J.C. Penney addition to Northland Mall, Worthington: Vanity, a junior girls apparel chain, and Ax One Hour Photo, which was to relocate from its Oxford Street location.

Worthington's public school choirs presented their annual Spring Choral Variety Show, featuring a series of selections from Cy Coleman's "Wildcat," the rousing Broadway show that pushed Lucille Ball to new heights of critical acclaim. Also on the program was the spiritual "Listen to the Lambs" and Hawley Ades' "Tico Tico."
Swanson's grocery of Worthington featured these advertised specials this week: 10 Florida grapefruit for 59 cents, 10 pounds of potatoes for 29 cents, one pound of fresh carrots for 10 cents, a 50-pound bag of Pillsbury's Best flour for $3.39, two pounds of "all popular brands of coffee" for $1.18, and a half-gallon of Swanson's A-plus ice cream for 55 cents.
Despite a heart attack while on the job, Russell Fey, 48, of Edgerton was able to deliver the two remaining students on his bus to their homes Monday afternoon and drive back to town. From there, he was rushed to Pipestone Hospital in serious condition. Fey was the second school bus driver in Edgerton to suffer a heart attack while on the route. Three weeks earlier, William Pool, 46, had an attack while on the morning route.
An undetermined number of turkeys drowned Tuesday night when water backed up into the barns at the Lloyd Rapp turkey farm south of Luverne. With the big thaw following the record-breaking snowstorms earlier in March, flooding was beginning to occur in the area.

A large crowd of stockholders of the Farmers' Elevator Co. attended the annual meeting of the co-operative at the Bigelow town hall. Presiding over the meeting was William Downes, president of the board of directors. Excellent circumstances were revealed by the report of the annual audit. A net worth of $32,565.22 was revealed above reserve funds, liabilities and dividends.

A howling storm and steadily falling thermometer greeted Worthington and vicinity as residents went about their daily tasks. Approximately 12 inches of snow had fallen since 6 p.m. the night before. In addition, the snow was wringing wet, making heavy going for motor traffic. A day later, the temperature fell to two degrees below zero.
Thirteen Baptist churches in a district ranging from Worthington to Breckenridge, and east to include Granite Falls, were represented at a two-day conference at the Worthington First Baptist Church. Dr. R. L. Moyer, dean of men at the Northwestern Bible School in Minneapolis, was among the featured speakers.
