WORTHINGTON -- The Worthington boys' tennis team won two of the three doubles matches Thursday against Blue Earth Area.
However, the Buccaneers won three of the four singles matches in a close 4-3 victory.
"I'm proud of the how the guys played," Worthington head coach Mike Marquardt said. "We were very consistent (Thursday). We hit some great shots. We played a great team, and we stepped it up to a new level. We played some good tennis (Thursday). Now we just have to keep that going for Redwood (today)."
At No. 2 doubles, David Sorensen and Zach Nerem defeated Taylor Umland and Hans Kittleson 7-5, 6-4.
Worthington also earned a victory at No. 3 doubles. The team of Kyle Hain and Shane Pedersen defeated Harry Cadelic and Colan Surratt 6-2, 7-5.
The other Trojan victory came from Adam Vosburgh at No. 1 singles. The senior defeated Riley Holmseth 6-1, 6-2.
Dayton Williamson suffered a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at No. 2 singles to Blue Earth's Aaron Wilhelmi, while Nezir Bardan lost 6-2, 6-0 to BE's Wade Wilhelmi.
Justin Dulege defeated Worthington's Dan Wetering 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Taylor Wiener and Mitchell Benson suffered a 7-5, 6-1 defeat to BE's Matthew Purvis and Garrett Passer at No. 1 doubles.
In exhibition play, Chris Lo and Issac Waas lost 8-6, while Travis Vuong and Kevin Cariolan won an 8-1 decision. Lance Homan and Julio Casillas lost 8-4 for the Trojans.
Fairmont 5, Luverne 2
LUVERNE -- Facing a tough Fairmont team, Luverne (6-8) lost all three doubles matches in a loss Thursday.
Fairmont's Paul Miller won at No. 1 singles against Luverne's Austin Lee 6-3, 6-4.
At No. 2 singles, Luverne's Joel Wohnoutka defeated Dylan VonBank 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Fairmont earned a victory at No. 3 singles as Josh Vetta defeated Nick Sandager 6-4, 6-1.
Luverne's Michael Graff earned a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles.
In doubles play, Tony Hoong and Spencer King teamed up to defeat Luverne's Joey Vajgrt and Jonny Vajgrt 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
At No. 2 doubles, Spencer Seibert and Garrett Cochran defeated Luverne's Scott Nelson and Dustin Deutsch 6-4, 6-3.
Fairmont's Alex Kopischke and Taylor Burgraff defeated Tyler Moran and Austin Stroeh 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
